Sam Belvin takes Flight

In 1910, Sam Belvin announced to the town that he would fly from the top of the courthouse to the top of the Masonic building. Outfitted in elaborately fashioned wings, the wily old charlatan climbed to the top of the courthouse with fanfare and bravado. His colleagues planned a diversionary tactic on the outskirts of town, knowing that at the cry of "fire" everyone would come running. During the excitement, Sam climbed down and reappeared atop the Masonic building announcing to all returning that he had flown there. Sam had not fooled anyone, but he always laughed to tell it.
